A week after Boston Marathon bombings, Zubeidat Tsarnaeva phoned her son Tamerlan in Massachusetts to make sure he was safe.
"Mama, why are you worrying?" Tamerlan replied from Boston, laughing.

Days later, it was the son who phoned his mother. The two, in recent years, had shared a powerful transformation to a more intense brand of Islam.

A turn toward radical Islam by Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the Boston Marathon bombing suspect killed by police, forced a split in the family and shattered his relationship with his parents. Jennifer Smith and Alan Cullison explain. Photo: AP Images.

The trauma nurses who took care of Boston bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev after his arrest have a straightforward explanation. "I don’t get to pick and choose my patients,” one told the Boston Globe.
The three public defenders assigned to Tsarnaev would have been similarly constrained. But what about the two prominent defense lawyers who have offered their services? Why choose to represent a man accused of turning the Boston Marathon finish line into a war zone?

Likewise, how can the lawyers representing Cleveland’s Ariel Castro fight for the alleged serial kidnapper and rapist? And what about the attorneys for the recently acquitted ... Read more »

RiaNovosti in Russia recently interviewed Devens Medical Center spokesman John Colautti about Dzokhar Tsarnaev's conditions of confinement.

Jahar is locked down 23 hours a day 5 days a week and 24 hours a day on weekends. He has no TV. He could listen to a walkman radio if he had $45 to buy it. His meals are brought to his cell. A book cart is brought by his cell a few days a week. He eats every meal alone in his cell. He gets three showers a week -- in his cell. He's not allowed contact with other prisons. Even if his injuries improve and he is moved to another facility, it's unlikely his living conditions will be any different -- he'll be deemed to be a "celebrity" inmate who needs to be segregated from general population. This could easily go on for a year.

May 31 2013 ( Recap )

Why was Ibragim Todashev, 27, killed as he was being questioned by the FBI in his Orlando apartment? Yesterday I pulled together numerous news reports documenting the contradictory explanations offered by law enforcement officials, many of them quoted on the condition of anonymity. Everyone seems to agree that Todashev had been questioned for at least several hours when an altercation took place. But early reports had him attacking an FBI agent with a knife or blade; at least one suggested he might have been reaching for a gun; others described him as unarmed; and still others suggested that he either wielded or lunged for a nearby samurai sword!

That brings us to a Thursday New York Times article that quotes "a senior law enforcement official briefed on the matter" who offers yet another version of what happened. Here are the details:

"The shooting occurred after an F.B ... Read more »

The words "innocent until proven guilty” were included in the U.S. Department of Justice’s news release about Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s indictment for his "alleged” role in the Boston Marathon bombing, but that hasn’t stopped the nation’s media and picture leaking Boston cops from claiming only that he’s guilty. Young people in various nations across the world are using social media to monitor what many believe is a "set up” by U.S. federal authorities to frame "Jahar” for a crime he didn’t commit. Political leaders have exported the idea that the U.S. system of justice advances ... Read more »

Two self-generated photos by two young men. One "looks” guilty. One "looks” innocent.

The power of images to shape or confuse our understanding of events has never been more apparent than in two hugely emotional cases that have generated enormous coverage and national soul searching: the Trayvon Martin killing, and the Boston Marathon bombings.

In that now-famous photo of Trayvon Martin, a teenager stares at the camera. He is nearly expressionless. A gray hoodie frames his face. To many Americans invested in George Zimmerman’s innocence, this was proof of Martin's menacing intentions.

The actors have been picked, the scenario is at the ready, and on Wednesday morning, Braintree police will join others from around the region in the search of a missing child.

The mock child abduction is a drill intended to practice Amber Alerts, and members of 42 police departments will join with regional police team Metro Law Enforcement Council (Metro LEC) to practice the response.
"We’re doing this to test our own capabilities and see how we work together as a team,” said Steve Williams, executive director of Metro LEC

The drill isn’t only a practice round for members of the regional group. Efforts will be judged by federal partners with the hopes of gaining certification as ... Read more »

The Massachusetts State Police photographer who released photographs of Boston bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s capture was placed on desk duty today while internal affairs investigates his action to see what rules, if any, he broke.

Sgt. Sean Murphy has generated quite a Facebook following for his release of the photos — an act aimed at countering the recent Rolling Stone rock-star cover portrayal of the suspected Boston Marathon terrorist. An estimated 40,000 supporters clicked "like” on a Facebook page created just for him, called "Save Sgt. Sean Murphy.”

On Monday, Sgt. Murphy started desk duty, The Boston Globe reported.

He arrived at State Police headquarters ... Read more »

Janet Jackson, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Britney Spears, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. Have you spotted the difference?

That's right, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev isn't a musician. So what the hell is he doing onthe cover of Rolling Stone? (OK, so Ono isless of a musician than a human chalkboard, and yes you can get actors and Obamas on the front of Rolling Stone, but anyway...)

It’s another example of why you should never trust the government.

Back in April federal officialdom told us Boston bombing suspect Dzhokar Tsarnaev was shot in the throat and unable to talk. Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick was trotted out to confirm this fantasy story. He said Tsarnaev was in "serious but stable condition” and "not yet able to communicate yet.”

Then we were fed a more theatric version where the young Tsarnaev attempted to take his own life when he was supposedly trapped in a boat. "It is thought the teenager placed a gun in his mouth and pulled the trigger in a desperate bid to avoid capture and a possible death penalty,” claimed the British version of the National Enquirer, The M ...
