April 23, 2013 (Recap)

If the United States decides to seek the death penalty for Boston Marathon bomb suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, his defense team will try to show that his brother, Tamerlan, was the mastermind behind the plot.

The devil, as the saying goes, is in the details.

Whether accused Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is put to death or spends the rest of his life in prison may depend on his defense team’s ability to show that his older brother, Tamerlan, was the true mastermind of the plot, three prominent attorneys tell the Daily News.

Ibragim Todashev told federal immigration officials he feared persecution in his native Russia and needed safe harbor in the United States. He won asylum in 2008, then a green card. Then, relatives said, Todashev made plans to return to the country he’d fled.

Before he could follow through on those plans, the 27-year-old was shot and killed in Orlando on May 22 by an FBI agent investigating the Boston Marathon bombings. But Todashev’s willingness to return to a place he said he feared is raising new questions about his asylum claim, and focusing new attention on the asylum case of his friend, suspected Marathon bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev.
"I haven’t seen any justification for the granting of asylum ... Read more »

The embattled deputy inspector general at the Department of Homeland Security destroyed incriminating documents to prevent their public release, used federal funds to pay for two Puerto Rican vacations, and bugged his employees’ phones and email, a new letter from Cause of Action, a government-accountability group, charges.

The recent allegations against Charles Edwards add to those leveled last week by the Senate Homeland Security Committee. The Daily Caller News Foundation reported on Friday that the committee accused Edwards of whitewashing a politically sensitive report, abusing agency resources, and committing a slew of other offenses.

The terrorist bombings in Boston were NOT Muslim inspired and I will tell you why.

If you follow the money you will NOT find Muslims at the top.

Terrorism and terrorist episodes are expensive to engineer.

For example, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev had a full scholarship to U of Mass which included room and board.

This is expensive.

It also put him next to Boston. It was a ... Read more »

Boston - Police arrested a man on Tuesday over allegations he used the name of an aunt who had been dead for more than a decade to try and claim about $2.2 million from the Boston Marathon bomb victims fund, prosecutors said.

The Massachusetts Attorney General's office said Boston man Branden Mattier, 22, told the fund's administrators that his aunt lost both of her legs in the attack on 15 April when two improvised pressure cooker bombs exploded at the finish line, killing three people and injuring 264 others.

But the aunt had been dead for more than a decade and Mattier was arrested at his home in Boston when an undercover police officer presented him with a fake cheque for $2.195m, prosecutors said.

"He sought to take these funds away from real victims of the Marathon attack and from the thousands of people who ha ... Read more »

A nation continues to wait for final word on the Supreme Court's Big Four cases this term — voting rights, affirmative action, DOMA, and Proposition 8 — but the justices' closest decision arrived first last Monday, in a 5-4 ruling on Salinas v. Texas in which the conservative members of the Court and Anthony Kennedy determined that if you remain silent before police read your Miranda rights, that silence can and will be held against you. Here's what that means.

Basically, if you're ever in any trouble with police (no, we don't condone breaking laws) and want to keep your mouth shut, you will need to announce that you're invoking your ... Read more »
